The house and its terrace studio is surrounded by an orchard garden with views of Satra Mountain. It is located on a ridgeway between Cupseni and Costeni villages, Maramures, NW Transylvania. Wonderful panoramic views offer inspiration for every artist in an ‘enchanted’ landscape.* Step back in time with a walk around the picturesque village for a glimpse into the way of life and traditions of Maramures where people carry scythes and pitch forks to make hay in the fields. The small wooden village church of St Elijah (18th century) is typical of the unique UNESCO wooden churches of Maramures.
Casa Carolina’s wonderful cook Viorica will delight you with savoury traditional dishes using fresh farm produce.
Cupseni is two hours drive from Cluj Airport.

Art Holidays Romania is delighted to invite you to its fourth year of summer drawing & painting courses in enchanting* Maramures, NW Transylvania. A land of UNESCO world heritage wooden churches, arresting landscapes and ancient traditions, Maramures was named by National Geographic one of its Best Trips destinations in 2015. Beloved by Prince Charles for its traditional wooden houses and wild flower meadows, Maramures and Tara Lapusului is the land of 1000 haystacks with fairy-tale scenery and a millennial way of life.
The courses are run by established British artists and tutors. The courses cater for painters at all levels and the numbers are restricted to maximise individual tuition. Professional artists looking for an artist retreat are welcome to join, discover Maramures and do their own work in a creative environment. Non painters are welcome to enjoy the wonderful surroundings, rich rural heritage and delicious home-cooked food.
Accommodation is offered at guesthouse Casa Carolina, in the village of Cupseni, where every household is adorned with hand-woven blankets and carpets, painted glass icons and intricate wood carvings. A different tutor provides tuition each week, and there will be different themes and media to choose from, often in the same week.

The house itself is situated on a hill at the edge of the village of Cupseni, in Lapus County, surrounded by hills which are either forested or used for agricultural land.
There is a 20 minute walk into the village where there are still local farmers in traditional garb using horse-drawn carts. You will be enchanted by the village traditional wooden church dedicated to St Elijah (“Sf Ilie”) built in XVIII century..
Fresh farm food is delivered to the house and our wonderful local cook will delight you with savoury traditional dishes.
In a typical week, five hours of tuition daily will be provided for four days.
There will be two outings, which take up much of the day, to explore this mythical realm and its UNESCO sites. There are plenty of opportunities for sketching and painting on these trips.
